Samson Primary features the best school garden in the world…
Well, we certainly think so! And with rain water tanks, composting units, vines that provide a shady place to sit, class vegie garden risers, fruit trees, chooks, a large shed decked out with gardening tools for the kids to use and a greenhouse, it is certainly worth having a look.
MESSAGE FROM CHRIS, OUR SCHOOL GARDENER:
FEED THE SOIL AND THE WORMS AT THE SAME TIME…
We have been trialling compost/worm tubes at school for some time now.
In various vegie gardens and around the school we have placed modified pipe into which the students drop food scraps, weeds and other organic stuff. Over time this ‘stuff’ breaks down in the same manner as it would in a compost bin, enriching the soil, but more particularly, attracting and feeding significant amounts of earthworms.
In our gardening program the students learn all about the necessity of soil enrichment, the importance of worms in our soil and the importance of organic recycling.
This in-situ compostor can be moved at will, does not attract vermin and takes up very little room in the garden. It diposes or organic domestic waste as efficiently as a compost bin but without the work of having to empty it.
If you are interested in purchasing one of our amazing compost/worm tubes for your home garden, seek me out at school on Mon, Wed, Thur and Fri mornings or ask at the front office for my mobile to call me. I’ll be happy to custom make one for you or give you more information so you can make your own.
The cost will be $25. Any money we raise will go towards the students’ garden/cooking program.
